The spectators who flocked around Trent Bridge on Friday witnessed a vintage Paul Collingwood. Owing to the exceptional knocks of Graham Clark, Cameron Steel and Paul Collingwood, Durham chased down a mammoth target of 298 set by Nottinghamshire in the Royal London One-Day Cup.

The 40-year ‘young’ former England national team captain scored 73 runs in just 47 balls, as Durham chased down the target of 298 runs with five balls to spare. But the start was not particularly good for Durham, as captain Keaton Jennings departed early without disturbing the scoreboard handlers much and Michael Richardson was back after scoring just one run.

From this situation, Clark and Cameron Steel steadied the ship, as the next wicket to fall was after 160 runs. Clark scored 92 runs at almost a run-a-ball pace, while Steel played a slow but steady inning of 77 in 109 balls. They both got out in a span of four runs, and the stage was set for Collingwood. Durham were in dire need of some fireworks as they still needed 130 runs in the last 15 overs.

And who was there to take them home? The veteran of many a battle Paul Collingwood. Banking on his Blitzkrieg Durham secured an emphatic win. After the match, Collingwood told “When you put in a batting performance like that as team it is very satisfying to see it through right until the end. We were in a bit of trouble but the way that Steely and Clark stuck at it, they kept us in the game all the way. It was fantastic to see that and they gave us a chance at the back end. Today was my day. I struggled when I first went in with the pace of the pitch but thankfully I got a couple out of the middle of the bat. We’re delighted with the win.”

Hales’ century in vain

Earlier for Nottinghamshire, Alex Hales scored a well-composed 104 in 103 balls. But he was put down on 27 and 93, and the culprit was same in both the cases, Durham bowler James Weighell. Collingwood was also good with the ball, as he gave away just 40 runs in his 10 overs when others were turning out to be expensive.

Paul Collingwood received support from Paul Coughlin and Stuart Poynter. Durham faces Worcestershire next at the County Ground on New Road, Worcester on 14th of May. Nottinghamshire will now host Lancashire at their home in Trent Bridge, Nottingham on the same day. The win lifts Durham to the second place of the North group, despite the fact that they were subjected to a two-point penalty at the start of the tournament.
