Mithali Raj and her troops made the entire nation of India proud with their stunning performance in the ICC Women’s World Cup 2017 hosted by England. The Indian contingent reached the finals with a breathtaking performance against the defending champions Australia but lost the final to England by fine margins. Nevertheless, this edition of the World Cup brought a revolution in Women’s cricket, escalating the viewership in an unprecedented way.

On the morning of the final encounter against the English, Honorable Prime Minister of India Shri Narendra Modi posted 11 different tweets through his official Twitter handle, to convey his best wishes to every individual in the playing XI separately. It was indeed a remarkable gesture from one of the most loved politicians of all time, who did something which no Prime Minister ever did.

Never witnessed such support

Speaking at NDTV’s Youth For Change in the national capital, the Indian skipper and the all time highest run scorer in Women’s cricket Mithali Raj said that she was overwhelmed with the response which their team got through out the course of the tournament. She added that the team had never witnessed such support, not just from the general public but also from the country’s top leadership, before.

In the same program, she confessed that it was a moment of pride and honor for the entire women’s team to see the Prime Minister tweeting about their team. Jhulan Goswami, another legend of Indian women’s cricket, stated that her captain was under immense pressure to perform well and to see her excel in the tournament was indeed a remarkable feeling.

Like every sports person, the 34-year-old fast bowler said her ultimate goal is to win a World Cup. She came close to winning this year but fell just short, precisely by 9 runs. But she wishes to fulfill her aspirations by doing well in the World T20 next year
