Pakistan Super League (PSL) is all set to follow the footsteps of Indian Premier League (IPL) by introducing a mid-season trade window in the fourth edition of the tournament to be played in the UAE and Pakistan from the second week of February. The PSL officials had mooted the idea before the third edition of the PSL but it was not accepted. However, the officials have put forward the same idea again and it is believed that the franchises would accept it this time.

If the idea gets accepted then it will give an opportunity for the franchises to cover the weakness of the teams by trading a player which isn’t needed by them. The idea of a mid-season trading window was introduced for the first time in IPL too, however, none of the players was traded by the franchises.

How the method works:

The trading window will be a three-day affair and will be activated only after each team has played a minimum of four matches. The window will remain active for 72 hours and only those players who have not played any match in the tournament for their franchises will be eligible for trading. Though, maximum two players can be traded by each franchise.

For example, Abdullah Shafiq was part of Multan Sultans in the previous edition of the PSL but did not get to play any match. Similarly, Islamabad United’s Rohail Nazir also didn’t make the playing eleven. If a similar situation arises in the next edition, Islamabad and Multan can swap Abdullah and Rohail provided both players agree to the same and belong to the same category.

Apart from local players, international players will also be eligible for trading provided all the criteria mentioned above for trading is fulfilled by them. For example, New-Zealander Anton Devcich was part of Lahore Qalanders and didn’t get to play first five games in PSL 2018 whereas Multan Sultans’ Nicholas Pooran didn’t play at all for his franchise. If a similar scenario arises this time as well, then their franchises will have an option to trade these players in the 72-hour trading window.
