The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and the Pakistan Super League (PSL) governing body have been working hard to convince players and teams to travel to Pakistan to play the final of the tournament at Lahore. PSL chairman Najam Sethi has been eying this as a breakthrough to bring international cricket back to Pakistan. But their plans were dealt a huge blow with a terrorist attack in Lahore on Monday (February 13)

Lahore was struck with a huge blow as a suicide attack killed thirteen people, the majority of them police officers, and over eighty people were injured. In the aftermath, Pakistan army chief General Qamar Javed Bajwa came out and tried to diminish the rumours that the PSL final was to be shifted out. He stated that all the support will be given to smoothly get through the PSL final. He said, “The army will extend full support to all concerned for holding the PSL final in Lahore as scheduled.”

This attack has further raised several questions over the security of the players. There are numerous terror organizations who have targeted the game of cricket in Pakistan. They have done this before as well when twelve gunmen attacked the bus carrying the Sri Lankan team where six players were injured. The location was again, near Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore. This happened in the March of 2009.

Gen Bajwa assured full security and said that all the links related to terrorism will be hunted down, right from all the financers to their leaders all the people who have had a hand in this blast will be found from any corner of the country and punished.

He gave the grieved families a visit promised them justice. He also visited the injured at Services Hospital Lahore and assured them full and neat treatment. There are other officials too who believe that this blast took place just to shake away the PSL final from Pakistan. Punjab Law Minister Rana Sanaullah and Pakistan Cricket Board officials also believe that it was a “conspiracy against PSL”.

Gen Bajwa applauded the Intelligence Agencies who were able to gather important information and managed to trace the heads behind the Lahore blast which includes a few Afghans. He said, “Our gains over the years cannot be reversed.”

The PSL final is scheduled to be played on March 7 and it will be for the first time after eight long years that Pakistan will be hosting a major cricketing event.
