Ranji Trophy 2016-17 is moving towards the business end, with the quarter-finals round the corner, all teams are keen on beefing up their strengths. Yet another round of Ranji Trophy began today. It was a close game between ball and bat on the day 1. Despite the close contest between ball and the bat, the scores at the end of day 1 suggest the dominance of bowlers.

The match in Delhi, between Madhya Pradesh-Bengal and Kerala-Services, continued to struggle with nature. Bad light stopped play after just 2 sessions of the game. After losing 3 early wickets, Abhimanyu Easwaran and Sreevats Goswami helped Bengal reach 185/4 by the end of the day. The local derby between Andhra and Hyderabad saw the latter coming on top on day one. Chama Milind’s five-wicket haul was well supported by Ravi Kiran’s 4/33 that broke the back of Andhra batting.

Heavyweights Baroda and Uttar Pradesh locked horns at Nasik. Kuldeep Yadav frustrated the Baroda bowlers with an unbeaten 77 to take UP to 360/7. Playing against Karnataka, Maharashtra’s batting woes didn’t seem to end. They were bundled out cheaply yet again on 163. Vinay Kumar was the chief wrecker with 5/46. Goa skipper Sagun Kamat led from the front as he notched up a century against Himachal Pradesh. AN Khare was the other centurion of the day. Playing for Chhattisgarh, he scored a ton against Jammu and Kashmir.

PK Panchal’s century saved the day for Gujarat against Tamil Nadu. Pradeep Sangwan and Sumit Narwal bagged 4 wickets for Delhi against Saurashtra. Saurashtra bundled out for a paltry 92. Delhi, in response, struggled at 194/8. Shikhar Dhawan & Gautam Gambhir scored 16 runs each.
