Less than a year from his debut, the 18-year-old Prithvi Shaw has already mastered the art of scoring centuries in India’s premier first-class tournament. He turned out to be a crucial player for his team, to be fair carrying the batting burden of Mumbai, a side with a historical record but in dire situations this season. The decision to allow him to play the domestic tournament instead of adding him to the U19 side paid off as the youngster struck his 3rd century of the Ranji Trophy 2017-18.

This was Shaw’s 4th century in Ranji Trophy with the first one coming in the semi-final of the last Ranji season. Including a hundred in Duleep Trophy before this Ranji season, Prithvi Shaw now has a total of five hundreds in seven FC games. The Mumbaikar turned 18 last week and featured in their team’s 500th Ranji Trophy game. It was a forgettable day for Prithvi as he bagged his first duck on the same day.

Most in Ranji Trophy; behind Sachin Tendulkar in FC

After centuries against Tamil Nadu and Odisha, Shaw scored 114 on Friday against Andhra. At his age of 18 years and 8 days, no other player in Ranji Trophy history has scored as many as four centuries. Ambati Rayudu and Ankit Bawne struck three hundreds each in Ranji Trophy before turning 18. His five centuries are the 2nd most by an Indian before his age in first-class cricket as Sachin Tendulkar struck seven FC 100s before turning 18. However, he had only two of them in the Ranji Trophy.

With 873 runs in 13 innings in his 7th FC game, Prithvi Shaw will now be aiming at becoming the quickest to 1000 first-class among Indian players. In terms of innings, the record is on the name of his Mumbai players Amol Muzumdar and Rusi Modi, who took 13 innings. However, no Indian completed 1000 FC runs before playing their 9th game. Prithvi needs another 127 runs by end of their next game to shatter this record.
