Rashid Khan made Afghanistan proud yesterday as he became the first cricketer from the country to feature in an IPL match. He made his IPL debut for Sunrisers Hyderabad at the age of just 18. Rashid was bought by the Sunrisers for a huge sum of Rs 4 crore in the IPL auctions earlier this year.

The leg-spinner played a vital role in Sunrisers 35-run win against RCB last night. He picked up 2 wickets and went for 36 runs in his 4 overs. The Afghani must have felt butterflies in his stomach when he was called to bowl in the 6th over of RCB’s innings.

The RCB openers were off to a flying start and were looking to get as many in the 6th over as it would have been the last over of the fielding restrictions. Rashid was struck for a neat cover drive off the second delivery he bowled by Mandeep, which rocketed into the fence for a boundary. The 18-year old wasn’t going to get bogged down by the assault as he immediately responded with a fast googly, which Mandeep failed to pick up as he played it back onto his stumps.

By virtue of getting this wicket, Rashid became the youngest wicket-taker in the history of the IPL. The record was previously held by Pawan Negi, who did it in 2012 aged 19 years and 116 days. Rashid bettered him almost by a year as he is 18 years and 197 days old.

Rashid picked up his second wicket of the night when he got the wicket of Travis Head in his second spell. Head was looking to hoick Rashid over mid-wicket but only managed to top edge it to the long-on fielder as the ball was too full to play that shot. His figures of 2/36 would have looked a lot better if Shane Watson hadn’t deposited him for a six over his head – off the last ball of Rashid’s spell.

Rashid is just a game old in this high-profile tournament. He will keep learning as the tournament progresses and will be a much-improved cricketer at the conclusion of the IPL.
