Cricket in Afghanistan has grown leaps and bounds over the last one decade. Their journey hasn’t been a smooth ride though. Apart from improving their skills, the players also had to deal with external factors like terrorist attacks at frequent intervals, especially from the Taliban that seems to be against the game. Despite the deterrents, the likes of Rashid Khan and others have succeeded in playing the sport at the highest level.

In 2009, they played their maiden ODI versus Scotland, which marked the beginning of their fairytale endeavour. Afghanistan went on to play the 2015 Cricket World Cup in Down Under. More importantly, they rolled over Scotland in a thriller to register their maiden victory in the tournament. The team has also qualified for next year’s World Cup in England and Wales.

Meanwhile, the Afghans were also crowned with the Test status in 2017, which was another feather in their hat. Recently, Asghar Stanikzai and his troops played their maiden Test match versus India at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangalore. Albeit they lost the match by a huge margin but the young team was showered with praises.

Rashid- The Wonder Boy

The leg-break bowler is currently the number one ranked in T20Is. He is a mere teenager but has already scaled heights in his short career. His wrong’uns have turned out to be a hard nut to crack for the batsmen. The 19-year-old has also been one of the sought-after players in domestic T20 events around the globe owing to the success he has garnered in a short span of time.

Recently, the Nangarhar-born cricketers went down the memory lane and reminisced about how he used to play cricket during his childhood days. He posted a video on Twitter regarding the same and wrote, “This is how from where I start my ckt playing with brothers at home big bro @amirkhan6362 has some skills to turn the ball #familylegspinners”
