Ricky Ponting, without a doubt, is the most successful captain in the history of cricket. He was a shrewd tactician and a brilliant leader during his time. Australia evolved into an indomitable force during his time and were truly the world leaders in cricket. However, there was a rumour about him playing with a spring in his bat back during the World Cup 2003. Indian off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin had a hilarious response to the same.
Ponting was a part of the World Cup winning squad thrice in 1999, 2003 and 2007. The Australian skipper back then was at the peak of his powers during this tournament. He led the side from the front and had a brilliant run. Ricky Ponting finished as the leading run-scorer for Australia in the mega-event. Overall, he scored 415 runs in 10 innings at an average of 52. He also struck two centuries then and was the third highest run-scorer after Sachin Tendulkar and Sourav Ganguly.
‘Sanath Jayasuriya had steel in his bat’
Such was his dominance that a rumour about him having a spring in his bat surfaced. Even though there was no social media back then, it spread like wildfire. People claimed that Ricky Ponting was able to hit those big sixes in the final because of the spring and the rumour further went on to state that there’d be a rematch soon.
“Ricky Ponting played with a spring bat in the 2003 WC Finals & hence was able to hit such big sixes. There is going to be a rematch soon. #90sKidsRumors,” tweeted one of the fan pages.

Ravichandran Ashwin had a rib-tickling response to this tweet. He shared another rumour in that was viral in those times that claimed that Sanath Jayasuriya played with steel in his bat. “So did Jayasuriya had steel in his bat and his bat was going to be tested. #90sKidsRumours,” he wrote in reply to the previous tweet.
