The preparations for the much-awaited next season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) have begun. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has asked all the eight franchises to submit the list of released players. They have set a deadline of November 15 for the same. It remains to be seen if the teams take tough decisions and let go off some big names in the circuit who underperformed last season.

IPL this year was a grand success as two of its suspended franchises, Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals, returned and performed exceptionally well. While the Royals qualified for the playoffs with a spirited show, MS Dhoni-led CSK went one step ahead and won the title for the third time in nine years of their participation in the tournament.

Teams can release players during the tournament

According to the reports in the Mumbai Mirror, the teams also have an option to release the players during the season as well. A couple of franchises have done the same in the past. The franchises, however, are expected to take some strict decisions in regards with some top players for not living up to the reputation last season.

Gautam Gambhir might be released who played for the Delhi Daredevils and also had to step down as the captain midway through the tournament. Manish Pandey was bought by the Sunrisers Hyderabad for a whopping amount of Rs 11 Crore. But he returned with only 284 runs despite playing almost every game barring a couple and could be released now as the team looks settled with their regular skipper David Warner set to return after serving the suspension.

Another cricketer who shelled big amount but didn’t perform was Jaydev Unadkat. The Royals paid him Rs 11.5 Crore but significantly underperformed compared the 2017 edition and he might have to go under the hammer once again ahead of the next season.
