Former Australian skipper Ricky Ponting believes that opening batsman Aaron Finch is the best fit for the role of captaincy in the shortest format of the game. As per the quotes in Bigbash.com.au, the former skipper lauded Finch’s leadership skills in the ongoing edition of the Big Bash League. Aaron Finch is currently leading the Melbourne Renegades in the premier tournament.

In addition to that, he has been in a prime touch with the bat too. No wonder, the attacking opener has been drawing praises from all corners for his captaincy and his batting. Ponting, in his quote, cited that the captaincy experience from the past will help Aaron Finch settle in the role yet again.

Earlier, Finch had led the Australian side in the T20Is prior to the commencement of the ICC World T20 in India last year. However, his poor form back then had led to the change of captaincy roles and Steve Smith had taken over the leader. “He’s been captain in the past, he’s in terrific form and you’d think he’s going to be in the team. I’m not sure what other names the selectors are tossing around, but to me it seems like a pretty good fit,” Ricky Ponting recently quoted.

Now, as per the recent reports in Sportskeeda, the Cricket Australia are now considering naming a new captain for the T20Is. There are a couple of reasons for this. The number one reason being that the selectors are keen on giving Smith a bit of a relief as he is their best batsman in all the three formats of the game. The other reason is the unusual schedule of the Australian tours next month. Australia are scheduled to play a home T20I series against Sri Lanka that ends on February 22. On the very next day, the Australian tour to India commences.

Clearly, the selectors will have to chalk out different teams for the two series. Steve Smith will not be available for the T20I series against Sri Lanka since he will be in India for the Test series. The name of Aaron Finch has emerged as the forerunner for the post. Mark Waugh, who is one of the chief selectors, has been closely seeing Finch in the ongoing Big Bash as a commentator.
