India’s new find in Test cricket, Uttarakhand-born Rishabh Pant had a pathetic start to his career with the gloves. With swinging conditions in England, the rookie found it tough collecting the ball properly. Thus, he ended up leaking a lot of byes and critics eventually questioned his place in the side.

However, within a month’s time, the 21-year-old got a lot better with his job behind the stumps. He showed drastic improvement in the home series against Windies. Then, he dealt well with the bounce in trying conditions in Australia as well to cement his spot in the side. Rishabh Pant credited Kiran More for this improvement in his keeping skills.

Some minor tweaks were good enough to get Pant back on track

A slight alteration in the body posture and hand position was good enough to get Rishabh Pant up and running. He plucked 20 catches Down Under while playing Australia. This even included a record of 11 catches in a match in Adelaide.

“Keeping in England was a different experience altogether. After that, I worked with Kiran sir at the NCA on a few specific areas. It included hand-positioning and body posture. Every keeper has distinct movement and I tweaked it a little and it worked,” Pant was quoted as saying in Times Now.

While Rishabh Pant didn’t elaborate on the specifics, Kiran More shared more details about the process. He suggested the youngster have an open-chested stance similar to that of MS Dhoni. Also, More asked Pant to point his fingers towards the ground rather than in the direction of the bowler.

“Rishabh had a more sideways movement and I suggested a bit more open-chested stance. It helps in balance and keeping a still head, something that is key to Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s success,” More said.

“I advised a very minor change like pointing the finger towards the ground rather than the bowler. It helps one avoid injuries and success in taking catches increases,” he added.
