Former first-class cricketer Roderick Estwick has replaced Curtly Ambrose as the coach of the West Indies cricket team. The former West Indies bowler Curtly Ambrose served as the bowling consultant for the West Indies side for a period of three years. The highlight of his tenure as bowling consultant was the World T20 win in 2016, where the Windies were crowned the champions for the second time.

Roderick Estwick may not have featured in the West Indies Test side, but his coaching is reputed all over the Caribbean. He is also the bowling coach of the Barbados Pride franchise and has won many laurels for his achievements as a coach in Barbados and with the U-19 team. Estwick has played 37 First Class games for teams including Barbados, Transvaal in South Africa and the West Indies ‘A’ team.

Curtly Ambrose has been a legend of West Indies cricket. Having announced his retirement in the turn of the century, the towering figure of the now retired Ambrose still sends shivers down the spines of many a player. Who can forget the spell against Steve Waugh in the Caribbean, one of the incidents Waugh doesn’t remember as fondly as he’d like. As Simon Briggs once wrote: “A giant of the game in every sense, Curtly Ambrose was the most lethal pace bowler of his generation. Like his predecessor Andy Roberts, Ambrose didn’t say much, refusing countless interview requests with the motto “Curtly talk to no man”.

His easily deducible personality saw him eventually take to music later on in his career. The reason for Ambrose’s departure is not evident just as yet. Estwick will join the national team for the preparatory camp for the tri-series that will be held later this month.
