The winning captain of the tenth edition of the Indian Premier league, Mumbai Indians’ Rohit Sharma has set a new record for himself after taking home the coveted trophy for the third time, getting the better of the Rising Pune Supergiant in a nail-biting last ball finish at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad.

Rohit has now surpassed the likes of Mahendra Singh Dhoni, Ravichandran Ashwin, Suresh Raina and Ambati Rayudu to hold the record for most Twenty20 titles as an Indian player. Sunday’s trophy was his 7th overall in T20 cricket and 3rd with MI.

The most successful Indian T20 player

Rohit is the most successful Indian player when it comes to T20 cricket. This is because he has won the World T20 title in 2007, then the Asia Cup last year in 2016, and four IPL trophies, three with Mumbai Indians and one with the Deccan Chargers.

Rayudu, Raina, Dhoni and Ashwin have been a part six T20 wins. Harbhajan Singh and Yusuf Pathan have won five.

MI won a down to the wire game

In a down to the wire game on a low scoring pitch, Steve Smith’s men needed four runs to win off the last ball. Dan Christian managed to get the ball towards the mid-wicket rope, but the throw from the deep was in time for Parthiv Patel to break the stumps before Washington Sundar came back for a third run, which then would have led to a super over.

Mitchell Johnson was simply fabulous in his last over, taking the wickets of Manoj Tiwary and Steven Smith off consecutive deliveries to win the game for MI.

The win was a historic one for not just Mumbai Indians, who became the first IPL team win 3 titles, but also for skipper Rohit, who had double reasons to celebrate the grand night.
