The Indian team won the third Test match at Trent Bridge and made a comeback in the series to make it 2-1. The selectors had earlier named the team for the first three matches and today announced the squad for the last couple of Tests. They made two changes as Murali Vijay and Kuldeep Yadav were left out of the side. As the Indian middle order looked brittle in the first two Tests, a lot of Indian cricket fans expected limited-overs opener Rohit Sharma would be given another chance.

The selection committee instead rewarded two domestic performers Hanuma Vihari and Prithvi Shaw for their consistency in first-class cricket with a spot in the Test side. It was widely speculated that Shaw will be given his maiden Test call-up and what happened is in line with the populistic opinion.

Vihari got there after toiling hard over the years, before today, the moment the Andhra batsman has played 63 first-class matches and scored 5142 runs at an average that almost touches 60. Purely on statistical terms among current cricketers to have played at least 50 matches, Vihari has the best average.

Rohit isn’t too far behind. The Mumbaikar who bat in the middle-order while playing in whites has featured in 85 FC matches, has 6456 runs to his name and averages 54.71. He last played a Test match for the Indian team on the tour of South Africa where he scored 21 runs in the Cape Town Test and 57 in both the innings at Centurion. He was dropped for the Johannesburg Test that India went on to win and since then hasn’t been in the scheme of things for the longer format.

His fans were clearly furious with the decision and expressed their disgust on Twitter:

India squad for the fourth and fifth Test: Virat Kohli (C), Shikhar Dhawan, KL Rahul, Prithvi Shaw, Cheteshwar Pujara, Ajinkya Rahane, Rishabh Pant (wk), Hardik Pandya, Ravi Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, Jasprit Bumrah, Ishant Sharma, Mohammed Shami, Umesh Yadav, Shardul Thakur, Karun Nair, Dinesh Karthik (wk), Hanuma Vihari
