The racing Rajasthan Royals will be locking horns with the eliminated Chennai Super Kings at the Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai for the 68th match of the IPL 2022. It is a must-win game for the Men in Pink as they eye to seal a playoff berth, now that only two spots remain. CSK are out of the race, and this would be an obligatory game for them. RR have a strong net run rate, as compared to other teams in contention. Even if they lose the game, their NRR would play a big role in leading them into the top four. But that would not mean they should miss out on the one last chance.

Jos Buttler has not been able to perform in the past few games, but RR have got it covered in the form of Yashasvi Jaiswal, skipper Sanju Samson, and Devdutt Padikkal. The top order is one of the strongest positives for RR. Even when they pushed Ravichandran Ashwin to the third spot, he put up a brilliant half-century. Thus, the top-order batters will look to showcase their A-game against the out-of-form CSK.

RR did not have their finisher Shimron Hetmyer in the side for their recent encounter against the Lucknow Super Giants, but they still managed to seal the victory by 24 runs. Now that Hetmyer has returned, it will be an added bonus for the inaugural season winners. On the other hand, CSK has been going through some turbulence. After multiple cases of injuries, CSK was forced to change the playing combination every now and then.

They received a major setback when Ravindra Jadeja was ruled out of the remainder of the IPL, weakening the middle order. The controversy around Ambati Rayudu declaring his retirement, and taking his statements back showed that things are falling out of place for CSK. In their previous game against the Gujarat Titans, they tried out the benched players, of whom N Jagadeesan emerged as a finding. With an aim to build a stronger team for the next season, CSK would like to continue with the new combination in order to see how well the newcomers handle the pressure.

Pitch and conditions

The Brabourne Stadium will support both the batters and the bowlers. RR will have an advantage as their last fixture against LSG was at the same ground, and they posted a total of 178 runs. A total of 14 wickets fell in the game, which indicates assistance to bowlers as well. It can be a high-scoring pitch if the team batting first utilizes the most out of it, just like how Punjab did against RCB. A score between 160-180 would be expected from the team batting first.

Playing combinations for RR vs CSK

Rajasthan Royals

Jos Buttler will need to get back to his hitting mode and add the important runs in the powerplay. His partner Jaiswal has been on a roll since he was called back after a brief break. The top-order batter will have to put up a show so that not much burden is added to the middle order. Even so, RR has Shimron Hetmyer as their anchor who can steady the ship and sail them through a big score or a big chase. Pacers and spinners will have to be at their best.

Predicted Playing XI: Yashasvi Jaiswal, Jos Buttler, Sanju Samson (c & wk), Devdutt Padikkal, Shimron Hetmyer, Riyan Parag, Ravichandran Ashwin, Trent Boult, Prasidh Krishna, Yuzvendra Chahal, Obed McCoy

Chennai Super Kings

Not much is left for CSK this season, apart from hunting for fresh and new talents. Their core members, whom they retained in the auction, have failed this year, and the four-time champions seriously need to work on their strategies. For their closing game of the tournament, the batters would eye towards putting up a big show, and the new entrants and the fresh bunch will try to end it big in order to aim for a place back in the team for the next IPL.

Predicted Playing XI: Ruturaj Gaikwad, Devon Conway, Moeen Ali, Shivam Dube, N Jagadeesan, MS Dhoni (c & wk), Mitchell Santner, Prashant Solanki, Simarjeet Singh, Matheesha Pathirana, Mukesh Choudhary
