S Sreesanth is in the news once again and this time it is not for his actions in the reality show Bigg Boss. It is related to the life ban imposed on him by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) for his alleged involvement in the spot-fixing scandal. Despite the fact that he was let-off by the trial court in July 2015, the BCCI has maintained its stance and didn’t lift the ban over him only for the Delhi High Court to put a stamp over it later.

However, Sreesanth’s plea has been accepted by the Supreme Court now as he feels that if the former Indian cricketer Mohammad Azharuddin could return to the fold in the cricketing activities, then even he should be allowed to do it. Azhar had contested for the post of President of the Hyderabad Cricket Association after the life ban was lifted on him thanks to the case he won in the Court.

Life ban is too harsh

Senior advocate Salman Khurshid, appearing for the cricketer, maintained his stance of S Sreesanth’s ban to be revoked while speaking to the bench of Justices Ashok Bhushan and Ajay Rastogi. He also pointed out that the other names were also cropped up in the spot-fixing scandal in 2013 but they were banned only for three to five years apart from Sreesanth.

“Life ban is too harsh. He is already 36. He cannot even play local club cricket because of the ban. He wants to play cricket and he got some offer from England but the offer will disappear if he is not allowed to play,” Salman said while pleading to the Court that the cricketer should be allowed to play the game again.

Meanwhile, the other Senior advocate Parag Tripathi, appearing for Committee of Administrators (CoA), said that there is zero tolerance against any kind of corruption and the life ban has been imposed on him to send the stern message to the other players.

Now that the Court has accepted Sreesanth’s plea they have posted the hearing in the third week of January next year and it remains to be seen if his ban is revoked.
