Both before and after retirement from the 22 yards, Indian cricketing legend Sachin Tendulkar has been a philanthropist off the field. From adopting villages to bearing the education expenses of the underprivileged children, Tendulkar has time and again shown his concern for the lesser-addressed social issues of the country.
This time around, he has shifted his focus to helping the growth of wheelchair cricket in India, by donating a sum of Rs. 4 lakh to the team. Wheelchair Cricket India Secretary-General Pradeep Raj revealed he sent an e-mail to Sachin seeking sponsorship, to which the Master Blaster was quick to reply.
“I had emailed him (Sachin Tendulkar) and his office got in touch with me after three days. They asked me some questions and after some days Sachin donated the money to us. It is really a huge help from his side. We all are very excited and want to thank him,” Raj told ANI.
A good tournament for Indian wheelchair cricket team
The Indian wheelchair team travelled to Bangladesh for a tournament, for which Tendulkar helped with air tickets and other financial support required. They played a 3-match series against Bangladesh, winning the last two, while the first one was a wash-out due to rain.
“We’re immensely grateful to Sachin. But for him, it would have been difficult for us to undertake the tour,” said Pradeep Raj, who started the wheelchair cricket in India. Tendulkar also gave the team a pep talk before they left for the series. The team returned to Delhi on May 9 after beating Bangladesh 2-0,” an official told the media.
Currently, Tendulkar is busy with the Mumbai Indians in the Indian Premier League, who are still in the race for playoffs. This year, the IPL has seen an interesting race for the playoffs, with KKR, MI and RCB batting for the fourth spot on the points table. The final will be played on May 28 at Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai.
