The 2018 Hockey Champions Trophy is currently taking place and India is one of six participants in the tournament. A couple of days ago, the Men in Blue thumped arch-rival Pakistan by 4-0 to emerge triumphant in their opening match. It also ensured that they stormed to the top of the ladder with three points and with a goal difference of 4, which will be hard to overhaul for their opponents.

Yesterday, the team played against Argentina and won the match by 2-1. Harmanpreet Singh took India into the lead into the second quarter and 13 minutes later, in the same quarter, Mandeep Singh’s second goal of the event helped his country to a resounding 2-0 lead. However, Argentina made amends by converting a penalty corner moments before the close of the first half.

Another thumping performance

The teams fought tooth and nail thereafter, but it was the Blue Army who held their nerves emerged victorious. Meanwhile, India remain at the top of the points table with six points from two victories. Their next match is versus Australia, who won yesterday against Pakistan, on June 27. With the resounding performances, India have presented themselves amongst the strong favorites to qualify for the Final on July 1.

Sardar Singh, one of their most experienced campaigners, played his 300th international match. Sachin Tendulkar, the former Indian cricketer, congratulated the hockey team during their first win. Even this time around, he showered his accolades on India’s dominance over their opposition while congratulating Sardar on his achievement. However, in his post on Twitter, he mistakenly used Mandeep Singh’s picture.

He wrote, “Fantastic weekend for the @TheHockeyIndia team beating Argentina after a stellar win yesterday. Special mention to @imsardarsingh8 on playing his 300th game for India! #ChampionsTrophy. #INDvARG”
