Sachin Tendulkar terms Prithvi Shaw’s progress remarkable

Last month, the Indian U19 team won the World Cup 2018 quite comprehensively. The other teams were no match for the Boys in Blue as they hammered oppositions with ease. The hard work that the team had put in over the past year under the guidance of Rahul Dravid finally paid off. Bowlers generated serious pace, batsmen were at their best and the team displayed fielding of the highest quality.

Rapid Progress

Prithvi Shaw, the World Cup winning skipper led the team from the front. He scored 261 runs in 6 innings at an average of 65.25. The youngster has shown remarkable development as a batsman over the past few years in age group cricket having grabbed the limelight very early in his career.

He was also part of the Mumbai team for the Ranji Trophy and scored a century on debut in the 2016-17 season. Shaw is making his presence felt in all the domestic tournaments at a tender age and is considered the next big thing in Indian cricket.

Former Indian batsman and another batting stalwart from Mumbai Sachin Tendulkar is also impressed with the way Shaw has been shaping up.

“I saw Prithvi Shaw play in New Zealand (in the U19 World Cup). How he has progressed is remarkable”, said Tendulkar at the opening ceremony of the inaugural T20 Mumbai League in Mumbai on Saturday. The league’s Commissioner, Sunil Gavaskar, and mentor Dilip Vengsarkar, both former Mumbai and India captains, were present at the event, along with former Test players Sandeep Patil and Vinod Kambli, mentors of two of the teams.

Interestingly, Shaw became the youngest player to score a century in Duleep Trophy as he broke Sachin’s record in 2017. His rapid rise earned him an IPL contract with Delhi Daredevils in 2018.

Shaw is all set to play for North Mumbai Panthers under Ajinkya Rahane in the Mumbai T20 league. The tournament kickstarts on Sunday at the Wankhede Stadium. Sachin is the brand ambassador and believes the league to be an ideal platform or young players and experienced ones to express themselves. It is a stepping stone for the cricketers who wish to get recognized at higher levels.
