The deaths of Kobe Bryant, one of the greatest basketball players the world has seen, along with his teenage daughter Gianna have shattered the sporting fraternity. Heartfelt condolences poured in from all quarters after the 41-year-old died along with his daughter in a helicopter crash in California’s Calabasas early on Monday and cricketers also did not miss out.

From Indian captain Virat Kohli to pacer Jasprit Bumrah who recently made a return to the Indian team, reactions came out on Bryant’s untimely death. Kohli said on Instagram that Bryant was one of his childhood heroes and called the news “absolutely devastating”. He recalled Bryant producing magical moments with the ball on the court and said “life is so unpredictable and fickle”. “I am absolutely Heartbroken. Rest in peace. Strength and condolences to the family,” the 31-year-old said in his Instagram post.

Kohli is currently leading India in New Zealand where the Men in Blue have won both the T20Is they have played so far against the Black Caps in Auckland. Another win in Hamilton on Wednesday will see the visitors clinching their first-ever T20I series in New Zealand. The series features five games.

Kohli’s deputy Rohit Sharma, who has not got runs in the two matches after belting a match-winning century against Australia in Bengaluru last Sunday, called it a “sad day for the sporting world” on Instagram. “Sad day for the sporting world today. One of the greats of the game gone too soon. Rest in peace Kobe Bryant and his little daughter Gianna and the other victims,” he said.

Bumrah reacted on Twitter, saying Bryant went “too soon”.
