On July 14, Super Sunday, the sporting world was a witness to a couple of nail-biting matches. The final of the 2019 World Cup and the final of the Wimbledon enthralled one and all in the sports fraternity. As far as the cricketing aspect is concerned, New Zealand and England strained every sinew to get their hands on the silverware. The game wasn’t a high-scoring one, but it entertained through.

After the Black Cups set 241 as the target, the Brits didn’t have it easy by any stretch of the imagination. But Jos Buttler and Ben Stokes pulled them out of the pits and reignited the hopes of the Three Lions’ maiden World Cup. The Englishmen scored 15 off the last over from Trent Boult courtesy of some unreal composure from Stokes, who churned out a priceless knock of 84 runs of 98 balls.

The game was tied and it went into the Super Over, where England scored 15 runs off Boult. New Zealand tied their opponent even in the one-over eliminator, but couldn’t get their hands on the silverware. England won on account of having smacked more number of boundaries.

Federer and Djoker’s emphatic duel

Meanwhile, at the Wimbledon Centre Court, the evergreen Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic fought it out for glory. Djokovic edged the legend through a tiebreaker in the first set but got thrashed in the second. However, in the third set, the Serbian kept his nerves tight to edge out Federer in another tie-breaker. Federer isn’t someone to throw in the towel easily and got his mojo back as he got back to contention as he made it two sets all after four sets.

The fifth set turned out to be an absolute delight. Both pulled off some stupendous shots to hold the fort. After 24 games, the match went into a tiebreaker. After losing the first two tiebreakers, Federer had the chance to make amends, but unfortunately, the Swiss personality couldn’t.

Djokovic won the game 7-6 (7/6), 1-6, 7-6 (7/4), 4-6, 13-12 (7/3) in a five-hour long Wimbledon summit clash. In the meantime, Sania Mirza, who is involved in both the sports, directly and indirectly, was sandwiched between the two intriguing finals. Sania is an Indian tennis star and her husband Shoaib Malik was recently retired from the Pakistan cricket team. The 32-year-old India tennis star was delighted by the quality of both the sports. She also congratulated the athletes for putting their best foot forward.

The Indian star took to Twitter and wrote, “Now that I have recovered finally after these two unbelievable matches @Wimbledon and @cricketworldcup @icc.. What a day.. It was a day when Sport won hats off to these athletes ..”
