India were thrashed by Pakistan in the finals of the ICC Champions Trophy 2017, in a similar way in which they trounced Pakistan in their opening game of the tournament. The Men in Green outplayed the defending champions in all three departments of the game to justify their first-ever win in the tournament. Hasan Ali received the golden ball, while Shikhar Dhawan won the golden bat.

Disappointed Indian fans tried to find solace in India’s win over Pakistan in another sport – hockey. India’s daughter and Pakistan’s daughter-in-law Sania Mirza, wife of cricketer Shoaib Malik, expressed similar emotions in her tweet after the final. The Indian tennis ace congratulated India’s hockey team and Pakistan’s cricket team, saying the sport is a great leveller after all.

“Lost the cricket but won in hockey against Congratulations Team India and congratulations Team Pakistan sport is a great leveller!” she tweeted.

As far as the performance of her husband was concerned, he could not contribute much to Pakistan’s mammoth score of 338, walking back on only 12 runs. Their journey to the finals, and then to the title, was heartwarming. After being regarded as underdogs in the tournament for being 8th on the ODI rankings, they defied all odds to beat the big names and clinch a historic win.

Sania tweeted

Having failed to reach the 250-run mark in this tournament, Pakistan posted 338 for four on the back of a clinical century by Fakhar Zaman, who hit 114 off 106 balls. Pakistan then bowled out India in only 30.3 overs on the back of a brilliant opening spell by Mohammad Amir who was just unplayable on the day. On the other hand, India hammered Pakistan 7-1 in the semifinal of the World Hockey League also in London, something that was historic for the Indian team. And just as Mrs Malik said, that is the beauty of sports.
