After facing disciplinary issues, Sanju Samson is finally back in the national reckoning and his inclusion in the India A team for the first warm-up game against England will provide him with the much-needed opportunity to prove his credentials again. Despite going through a horrible run in the Ranji Trophy and facing disciplinary issues by the Kerala Cricket Association, the National team selectors have shown faith in Samson as they feel the 22-year-old is a prospect for the future especially in the shorter formats of the game.

Though the warm-up match won’t be considered as an international match but it will surely give the platform to Sanju to show what he is capable of and rediscover his lost touch after recuperating from a knee injury. “This opportunity has come at the right time for me and I am raring to go,” Sanju was quoted as saying by the Times of India from Bengaluru where he was a part of a pre-season camp for his IPL franchise Delhi Daredevils.

Samson made his international debut for India against Zimbabwe in 2015 in a T20I match where most of the seniors were rested but in the upcoming warm-up match against the English team, he could rub shoulders with some big names of the game- none bigger than his childhood idol Mahendra Singh Dhoni who will be captaining in the opening Warm-up game. “I have played quite a lot of matches against him in the IPL but this will be the first time I will be playing in Dhoni bhai’s team. It’s really exciting and I am looking forward to it,” said Sanju.

Considering his domestic performances, Sanju may not have merited a place in the side but due to his reputation especially as a limited overs batsman, the selectors decided to include him. His other competitors Ishan Kishan and Rishab Pant has been in red hot form and have made a name for themselves with their exploits in the Ranji Trophy.

Former India chairman of selectors Kiran More is a big fan of Samson and has been following the youngster’s career closely. Speaking to TOI More said, “He’s an outstanding player. He has always been in the reckoning. Everyone goes through bad times. That’s part of a sportsman’s life. But he has the talent and the character to come back and perform.”

The 22-year-old will have testing times ahead and will be an integral part of the Kerala side for the upcoming domestic T20 and ODI tournaments. After the conclusion of the national one-dayers, there will be IPL in the line and Samson knows that he cannot afford to relax and have to perform consistently. “I don’t like to dwell on the past. Whatever happened has happened and right now I am in a good frame of mind and I would try to do well in every match that I play,” the youngster concluded.
