The ever deserving wicket-keeper batsman from Kerala, Sanju Samson has been finally recognised for his years of grind in the Indian domestic circuit. The Rajasthan Royals batsman has been selected for the upcoming Twenty 20 International series versus neighbours Bangladesh. He has been called up to the national side after a gap of four years. He last played an international game for India way back in 2015 against a mediocre Zimbabwe.
Though Samson made his debut for India in 2015, he got selected for the England tour in the senior side but unfortunately didn’t get a chance to feature in the playing eleven. But he didn’t allow that setback to take any type of mental toll on him as he continued scoring a huge amount of runs year after year in the domestic circuit. He performed decently throughout the Indian Premier League (IPL) seasons.
Sanju Samson has also been a consistent performer for India A side in the past year or so. However, with Rishabh Pant also in the T20I squad, who will take up the wicket-keeping duties is the question. But the chief selector MSK Prasad has cleared the air stating that the left-hander from Delhi will take the gloves behind the stumps. He also went on to say that Sanju Samson has been picked in the side as a proper batsman.
Sanju Samson has improved, says Prasad
“Sanju Samson included as a proper batsman, Pant to continue as wicket-keeper. Sanju’s problem 3-4 years back was inconsistency. Now he has improved. He had a fantastic series and wonderful Vijay Hazare. We consider him as a top-order batsman,” Prasad said.
Though Pant is the first choice wicket-keeper now, he must perform in this series as he has failed in the World Cup as well as West Indies and South Africa series as well. With Samson already in the team, the southpaw will be under pressure to perform. Though MSK Prasad has shown faith in the youngster vowing to back him to the hilt in the near future.
The T20I series between India and Bangladesh will commence on November 3 in Delhi with the other two matches to be played on November 7 and 10.
