The opening ceremony of ICC Cricket World Cup 2019 was a visual treat. This short, crisp event was absolutely star-studded and entertaining. The 60-second challenge during this ceremony was one of the biggest highlights. The captains of all the ten teams meanwhile were invited to the Buckingham Palace where they met with the Queen. While nine of the ten captains were all suited up for the event, Pakistan skipper Sarfaraz Ahmed was the odd and unique one out.

Instead of wearing the suit, Sarfaraz decided to don shalwar kameez with a jacket instead. This rose quite a few eyebrows and everyone was perplexed if there was an official dress code which was violated. Since the captains also met the Queen and Prince Harry, there were several questions raised about this attire. Pakistan skipper himself decided to address the matter and explained the thought behind that.

It is our national dress and I got the instructions from the board

During the media interaction ahead of the game against Windies, the 32-year-old was questioned about this dress. In his response, Sarfaraz Ahmed said that the Shalwar Kameez is the national dress of Pakistan. He mentioned that the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) passed the instructions for him to dress that way. Moreover, he revealed that it was a proud moment for him wearing the Shalwar Kameez.

“The shalwar kameez is our national dress and I got instructions from the board to do all these things so I tried to promote our national dress. I felt very proud that the other captains were wearing suits but I was wearing national dress,” said Sarfaraz Ahmed.

He also revealed that Prince Harry wished the best to all the captains and that it was a dream come true to meet the Queen. Moreover, Sarfaraz said that he informed the Prince that he is the wicketkeeper-batsman in the Pakistan team. In response, his Highness told him that he would come out to bowl to the Pakistan skipper one day. Sarfaraz seemed to be pleased with this interaction and looked animated as he spoke about this.
