Virender Sehwag, the former dashing Indian opener, who has been leaving his fans in splits on Twitter, continues to middle them. Sehwag yesterday tweeted congratulating the Indian Women for winning the World Cup 2017 Qualifiers. He went on to tweet, “Congratulations, @BCCIWomen on becoming #WWC17 Qualifier Champions! Great finish and really proud of you”.

Harmanpreet Kaur, who did a Dhoni by hitting a last over six to overcome the South African’s target of 245 was quick to thank her idol. She tweeted, “@virendersehwag Thank you idol”.

It was nailbiting finish to the game, where Indians required to score eight of the final two balls. Harmanpreet was left with No.11 Rajeshwar Gayakwad and had to finish the task on her own. The Sydney Sixers star kept her cool and struck a six over midwicket off pacer Marcia Letsoalo and scored a double off the last ball to secure the title. Letsoalo had managed to keep the batswoman quite in the first 3 balls of the over.

Sehwag, who has been witty and appreciative on his Twitter handle, where he has been active post his retirement was encouraging to say that Kaur would be an inspiration to coming generations. He went on to tweet that, “You are becoming an idol for future generation of women cricketers. Yesterday, you were extra special. Keep up the spirit and belief.”

Earlier in the day, South Africa were 244 all-out, with Mignon du Preez scoring highest score of 40. India’s pacer Rajeshwari picked 3 for 51. Indian chase boiled down to requiring 9 off the last over, thanks to Deepti Sharma’s 71 and Mona Mesharam’s 59. Karizanne Kapp picked 2 for 36 and was impressive. However, the Indians were to have the final laugh as the South Africans displayed underwhelming fielding and dropped too many catches and leaked runs. Like Sehwag wished, this team looks destined for greater heights.
