Mohammad Nawaz has emerged as one of the better players in the recent past for Pakistan especially in the shortest format of the game. The left-arm spinner has come through the ranks in the Pakistan Super League (PSL) where he plays for Quetta Gladiators under the leadership of the national captain Sarfraz Ahmed. His orthodox spin-bowling has foxed many batsmen during the tournament and has now credited his interaction with the seniors in PSL as the reason for his rise.

Pakistan faced Scotland in the first of the two-match T20I series on Tuesday and went on to defeat the hosts comprehensively by 48 runs. Nawaz was crucial for them as he choked the batsmen of Scotland with his accurate lines and lengths. He returned with the figures of 1/22 and Kyle Coetzer was his scalp who is the skipper of Scotland. His spell upfront helped the visitors keep a lid on the run-scoring in the powerplay overs.

Bowling in PSL raised the confidence

Mohammad Nawaz, while speaking in the press conference after the game, revealed that the senior players like Kevin Pietersen for his consistent performances at the highest level. “I was bowling in the PSL and then in the series against the Windies so I had some confidence to bowl in the same way against Scotland also. In the PSL, I was helped by some senior players like KP,” he said.

His actual role is of an all-rounder but very seldom he has got an opportunity to showcase his skills. The youngster also claimed that he is working on his batting and expressed his desire to become one of the better all-rounders at the highest level. “I am working on my batting and I want to be an all-rounder at an international level,” the 24-year-old added while also praising his skipper Sarfraz for his match-winning knock of 89 runs. He also added that batting at number 4 suits to the wicketkeeper batsman in the T20s.

“In the last T20I series he played at number 4 as well, so whenever he comes up the order he plays well. I think Sarfaraz Ahmed is comfortable at number 4 batting position,” Nawaz concluded.
