Separate arrangement to be planned for Indian women cricketers

It is evident that India will not go the Australia way where they introduced equal pay for men and women but there is a chance that there would be a separate arrangement for the women players.

While the news is that former skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni was paid Rs5,788,373 by the BCCI as a share of gross revenue from the international tournaments held outside India, the financial situation at the domestic level was not at its greatest. The domestic wage revision is on hold, for the time being at least. The Finance Committee of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has felt that the proposals, submitted before it yesterday in Delhi, need to be more robust and exhaustive.

The members, mainly committee chairman Jyotiraditya Scindia, sought more details from treasurer Anirudh Chaudhry, who submitted a paper on the revision of remuneration for the domestic cricketers. Scindia, in the meeting, asserted that the BCCI should study the payment structures in other countries and prepare a scheme that can be a model for other boards to follow.

“Basically, he said the proposal are not good enough and needs more research,” said a finance committee member, as reported by Mumbai Mirror.

A silver lining in the discussion

Meanwhile, a silver lining in the discussion was on the issue concerning increasing the income of women cricketers. Though it is evident that India will not go the Australia way where they introduced equal pay for men and women but there is a chance that there would be a separate arrangement for the women players.

Currently, the women cricketers are granted 1.3 per cent of the 26 per cent of the GRS. If that percentage is increased, someone else’s share may be affected. The plan, it seems, is now to have a separate system for the women players by taking their share out of the GRS.

The finance committee, meanwhile, has agreed that the state associations, hosting Twenty20 Internationals, will be granted Rs 1.5 crore as hosting fee, same as for a One-Day International.
