With the IPL being a 2 months tournament, and each home venue hosting a couple of games, it is unfortunately not possible for all cricket-crazy cities to host a game. However, they can definitely enjoy a stadium-like atmosphere by visiting the IPL Fan Park.
Launched in 2015, the purpose behind Fan Park was to engage cricket fans from all over the country in the league. These parks are constructed in open areas and stadiums, to offer a stadium-like experience to the local fans. Giant screens are set up for the public screening of the matches over the weekends. The entry is free for all and special arrangements are made to make it women and children friendly event.
The latest edition of the Fan Park is set to be bigger and better. Initially, it was in 16 cities, but this year it will be held in 36 cities of 21 states. These include 14 new cities, like Bhubaneswar, Bareilly, Kochi, Ludhiana, Tumkur and Nagercoil which are new to the Fan Park concept, as well as cities like Shimla and Shillong, where cricket has recently gained craze that continues to grow with each passing season.
Furthermore, there will be music and lots of stalls for merchandise, food, beverages and other activities by IPL’s official sponsors, to add to the electric atmosphere. In 2016, the venues witnessed a large turnout of 3,00,000 cricket enthusiasts at the Fan Parks. This edition, which will celebrate 10 successful years of the 8-teams league is expected to generate a greater turnout since the organizers are leaving no stone unturned to ensure a great season.
The first IPL Fan Park for this season will be held on Guwahati, Mathura, Aurangabad and Mysore on April 5. This is indeed a great initiative by the BCCI for those cricket fans who are deprived of live matches in their local stadiums.
