After a scintillating win over Sri Lanka in the first encounter in their own backyard, Bangladeshis were hopeful for yet another victory over the home side before the rain gods intervened in their second fixture. Taskin Ahmed made a name for himself as he became the 5th Bangladeshi bowler to take a hat-trick in limited overs cricket. After losing Gunathilaka early, Upul Tharanga and Kusal Mendis stitched an important partnership which laid the foundation for the Sri Lankan onslaught in the death overs. The Sri Lankan innings threatened to reach a total of around 350. However, the turning point in the innings came after the dismissal of Chandimal as Sri Lankan could only manage a total of 311, thanks to cameos from Gunaratne and Siriwardana.
One must not take any credit away from the Bangladeshi bowlers in the death. Due to disciplined bowling from either ends, Bangladeshis came right back into the match. As a result, the in-form batsmen from Bangladesh were hopeful of a result going in their favor. The second half of the match never took place as steady rain prohibited any sort of action. Therefore, Sri Lankans would look to salvage some pride out of the series with Bangladesh leading 1-0 and one to play for. The only positive the Lankans can take from the match is the violation of recent trend of abysmal batting they have been used to lately.
Focus will be on:
The Sri Lankan team would hope to end their drought for a win in the last match of series. One of the most crucial batsmen in their lineup has to be Kusal Mendis, who struck a ton in the previous match. Yet again he has to take up additional responsibility so as to salvage some pride from the series.
Just like the previous match, Taskin will hold the forefront in the bowling lineup in the death as well as in the powerplays. Bangladesh supporters would hope that he would carry the momentum in the upcoming match, providing vital breakthroughs for the team.
The latest sensation of Bangladesh cricket, Mehedi Hasan has impressed one and all with the limited opportunities is due to make an impact this one-day series. Hopefully he will make a necessary impact that will ensure a Bangladesh victory.
It is expected that both the teams would go unchanged especially after gross changes in the Second ODI without action.
