The three-match T20I series between Afghanistan and Bangladesh at the Rajiv Gandhi Stadium in Dehradun recently came to a close. After Greater Noida, the stadium became the Afghans’ second venue from the Indians. The hosts turned out to be insurmountable as they caned Shakib Al Hasan’s troops and clean-swept them by a margin of 3-0.

The first match was rather one-sided as the visitors couldn’t decipher the tricks of Rashid Khan and Mujeeb Ur Rahman. They gasped for breath, rummaged for comfort, only to see themselves getting hauled in a rabbit hole. In the second match, some resolute shows by Bangladesh saw them take the match right down to the wire. However, Mohammad Nabi’s blitz robbed them off a victory.

In the third encounter, Shakib and Co had the pride to salvage, which they eventually couldn’t. Rashid Khan’s nerves in the final over, coupled with a piece of a supernatural exhibition of fielding from Shafiqullah Shafiq at the long-on boundary helped the Afghans romp past their neighbours. The hosts won the toss and elected to bat first and the decision paid immediate dividends.

Afghans dominate

Mohammad Shahzad and Usman Ghani didn’t blaze away but made sure that their side didn’t stutter inside the field restrictions. However, the likes of Shakib, Nazmul Islam and Abu Jayed churned out some crucial spells and didn’t let their opponents rack up a massive score. Asghar Stanikzai’s men could only manage 145 runs in 20 overs.

Bangladesh, in their run-chase, lost wickets in clumps and found their backs pushed to the wall. Nevertheless, Mushfiqur Rahim spanked Karim Janat for 21 runs in the penultimate over to bring the match right in favour of his team. Rashid pulled a rabbit out of the hat and dismissed Rahim in the very first ball of the last over and defended nine runs to deny their oppositions a victory.

Following their win, the Afghans were cock-a-hoop and appreciations poured in from every nook and corner. Shahid Afridi, who played his last international match, a few days ago, also heaped praises on the sparkling bunch of cricketers. He took to Twitter and lauded the winners.
