Bangladesh’s star all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan returned to the team for the ODI series in South Africa after taking a break from the Test squad. He was granted a 6-month break from Test cricket in order to manage workload. On Sunday at Kimberley, the 30-year-old walked out to bat at No.3 after Bangladesh lost their first wicket while batting first.

This was the only the 2nd instance in Shakib’s 178-match ODI career where he batted in the top three in ODIs. He had earlier batted at No.3 against Zimbabwe in Chittagong in 2014 where he bagged a first ball duck. Shakib got out as the 3rd wicket of their innings scoring a 45-ball 29. He shared a 59-run stand in 12 overs with Mushfiqur Rahim. When on 17, Shakib completed 5000 runs in his ODI career and thus became the 2nd Bangladesh player after Tamim Iqbal to reach this milestone.

Alongside the 5012 runs with the bat, the all-rounder has also bagged 224 wickets with the ball in his ODI career. Thus he became only the 5th player to complete the all-round double of 5000 runs and 200 wickets in ODI cricket. Shakib needed just 178 matches to complete this double and thus became the quickest to reach the feat in terms of matches. The previous four players with this double needed over 200 ODIs with the quickest of them being Jacques Kallis – 221 matches, 43 extra games.

In Test cricket, Shakib has scored 3594 runs and picked up 182 wickets in just 51 matches and he should soon join the elite list of players with 4000 runs and 200 wickets in Test cricket. He is already one of the three players in T20I cricket with 1000 runs and 50 wickets as he aggregates 1208 runs with 71 wickets in 59 matches. Across formats, Shakib has 9814 runs and 482 wickets in 288 matches in his International career and could put him alongside Jacques Kallis and Shahid Afridi, who are the only players with 10000 runs and 500 wickets so far.
