Bangladesh all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan on Thursday received an official reprimand from the ICC match referee for breaching Level 1 of the ICC Code of Conduct during the Bangladesh v Pakistan Asia Cup T20 match on Wednesday.
Shakib who was batting on the score of 8 misread a Mohammad Amir delivery and was clean bowled at an important juncture in the game. Bangladesh at that stage required 26 runs to win from 16 balls and were 5 down with his wicket.
After the ball disturbed his stumps, he hit them with his bat in frustration but was quick to realize his mistake and immediately apologized to the on-field umpires.
Shakib was found to have breached Article 2.1.8 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to “abuse of cricket equipment or clothing, ground equipment or fixtures and fittings during an International Match”.
Today morning, he admitted the offence and at the same time accepted the sanction proposed by the match referee Jeff Crowe without a formal hearing.
The charge on the all-rounder was levelled by on-field umpires Anil Chaudhary and Ruchira Palliyaguruge, third umpire Enamul Haque and fourth official Shozab Raza.
Breach of the Level 1 of the ICC Code of Conduct earns the player a minimum penalty of an official reprimand and a maximum penalty of 50 per cent of the player’s match fee.
Despite the incident, the game ended on a high for the home team as they beat Pakistan by 5 wickets and made their way into the final of the Asia Cup T20 where they will meet India on Sunday for the title clash.
