There is a popular saying that goes ‘all’s well that ends well’ and it looks like the third Test between Windies and England have ended on the same note. The game in St Lucia was marred by the controversial altercation between Windies pacer Shannon Gabriel and England skipper Joe Root. On day three, Gabriel was seen having a heated exchange with Root.

The original comment by Gabriel was not picked up by the stump mic but the war of words ended with Root telling the Windies pacer, “Don’t use it as an insult. There’s nothing wrong with being gay.” The comment from Root made it very much clear that Gabriel had attacked the England star with a homophobic slur. The cricketing world soon turned on Gabriel while Root received widespread praise for his exemplary reply.

But it looks like the players have buried the hatchet now. After the end of the game, Windies Cricket’s official Twitter handle posted a picture of Gabriel spending some time with Root and Ben Stokes in the England dressing room. “Shannon entertains England skipper Joe Root and Ben Stokes after the Final test of the Wisden Trophy,” the tweet read.

England, meanwhile, beat Windies by 232 runs in the contest in St Lucia to end the series on a high. The hosts had already won the series after winning the first two games of the three-match series.

Gabriel suspended

Shannon Gabriel, nonetheless, has paid the price for his role in the altercation with the ICC banning him for the first four ODIs against England. The pacer has been fined 75 percent of his match fee in addition to receiving three demerit points which takes his total to eight within a 24-month period. That automatically equates to a ban from either two Tests or four ODIs or IT20s, whatever comes first.

Gabriel was charged under article 2.13, which relates to the personal abuse of a player, player support personnel, umpire or match referee during an international match.
