Not a good news for the cricket fans, as Pakistan’s opening pair of Sharjeel Khan and Khalid Latif will face long bans and hefty fines from the three-member anti-corruption tribunal, formed by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to probe into the spot-fixing scandal in the Pakistan Super League (PSL). The tribunal, headed by a former judge of the Lahore High Court, is likely to announce the verdict on Sharjeel’s case on Wednesday and then decide the Khalid’s fate.

The duo could face a ban up to 5 years along with a fine of 2 million rupees. Sharjeel and his lawyer Shaigan Ejaz had earlier said that they have full faith in the law and had also accepted the authority of the tribunal. On the other hand, Khalid had challenged the tribunal in the Lahore High Court twice and failed on both occasions. “The two cricketers are expected to get similar bans when the tribunal gives its verdict early next month,” a PCB official told PTI.

Zero tolerance approach by PCB

PCB legal advisor Tafazzul Rizvi said the board was taking all corruption and fixing issues as zero tolerance and no leniency would be shown to any player found guilty. “Yes, we are pushing the tribunal to impose a life ban on both the players. We have given enough compelling evidence against them and about their involvement in the spot-fixing case,” Rizvi said.

They also suspended four other players in the PSL case including left-arm pacer, Muhammad Irfan who is serving a 12-month ban after admitting to not reporting approaches by bookmakers, Muhammad Nawaz (who completed a two-month ban last week for similar actions), Shahzaib Hasan and Nasir Jamshed. In 2011, Salman Butt, who was the captain of the side then, fast bowler Mohammad Asif and Mohammad Aamir were banned for five years by an ICC anti-corruption tribunal for spot-fixing during the England tour in 2010.
