Sanju Samson is one of the most potent wicketkeeper batsman India has at present. However, his inconsistent shows haven’t helped his cause by any means. He donned the national colours for the maiden time versus Zimbabwe way back in 2015. Unfortunately, that turned out to be only game for the Indian side. He has shown sparks of brilliance at times, but couldn’t deliver them enough.
His List A average is around the 30s and the numbers don’t quite justify the potential he has. However, in the ongoing Vijay Hazare Trophy, Samson has come into his own. He started the tournament with scores of 67, 36 and 48, displaying what he is capable of. But he would’ve dearly wished to get a substantial knock under his belt as he didn’t have a List A century to his name.
Samson shines with the willow
Playing for Kerala against Goa in Alur, the 24-year-old wreaked absolute havoc as he became the first double centurion of the tournament. Samson scored 212 runs off only 129 balls. His knock was laced with 21 fours and 10 sixes and he helped his team rack up a colossal score of 377 for three in 50 overs. He got the apt support from Sachin Baby, who churned out 127 off 135 deliveries.
Samson came to bat after Robin Uthappa was out obstructing the field in the fourth over. Then he saw Vishnu Vinod getting out cheaply on seven. With the score at 31 for two in 7.5 overs, Samson took it upon himself and was then involved in a partnership of 338 runs in 41.2 overs with Babay.
After the knock, Samson was showered with praises. Shashi Tharoor, the Congress Leader, was highly impressed with the batsman’s efforts. He also asked the Indian selectors to take note of Samson. Tharoor was going to a meeting in Belgrade when he dropped the tweet.
He took to Twitter and wrote, “In transit in Frankfurt on the way to the @IPUparliament meeting in Belgrade when i get the news that Thiruvananthapuram’s own Sanju Samson has hit 200 in a Vijay Hazare 50 over game! Ten sixes, 20 fours. Don’t know if our white-ball selectors were watching?!”
