Sheffield Shield 2021-22: Queensland and Tasmania match gets postponed due to COVID-19 scare

Ever since the cricket world has resumed the post-COVD-19 era, there have been a lot of disturbances happening in staging the matches. In the latest turn of events, a Sheffield Shield match between Queensland and Tasmania had to be called off at the last minute due to a COVID-19 scare. The game has now been postponed for the later parts of the season as Tasmania refused to play against their opponents.

It has been reported that Tasmania returned home after getting information on four locally acquired COVID-19 cases in the Queensland camp. It has to be noted that the same match was all set to be played at Ian Healy Oval on September 28 but Queensland took to their Twitter to announce the postponement as reported by Cricket.com.au.

Soon after the announcement, Cricket Tasmania also came up with statements regarding the scenario and informed that they have decided on returning their Tigers Marsh Sheffield Shield and One Day lot to their den on Tuesday morning. The statement said that team has opted for a “cautious and considered approach” to march back.

“This is not a decision that was taken lightly. While the situation in Queensland hasn’t prevented the match from commencing today, a cautious and considered approach is being taken and it is our strong opinion that we are better having our players and staff home as we build a better understanding of the current landscape,” the statement by Tasmania cricket read.

“We look forward to playing the Queensland Bulls at the first opportunity. We thank Queensland Cricket and Cricket Australia for their understanding and flexibility with this match postponement, and we hope that this preventative measure will, with hindsight, not have been required,” it added.

In the same light of events, Cricket Australia added that the fate of this match is yet to be decided. In their statement, CA added that along with State and Territory Association, they will continue taking the health of players, officials, and staff members on top priority as they look forward to a safe and successful summer.
