Indian opener Shikhar Dhawan and lanky speedster Ishant Sharma has picked by Delhi for the T20 squad which will play in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. The team captained by Gautam Gambhir also features uncapped batsman Arjun Gupta who will replace Rishab Pant as the wicket-keeper. Pant has been selected in the Indian squad for the 3 matches T20I series against England.

Dhawan who is a member of the ODI squad in the ongoing series hasn’t been included in the T20I squad for his dip in form. Ishant Sharma hasn’t been in the scheme of things as far as limited overs cricket is concerned. This will provide him with an opportunity to prove himself in the shortest format ahead of the IPL auctions. Ishant has been released by his former franchise Rising Pune Supergiants and is currently without an IPL contract.

After reaching Kolkata it was reported by IANS that Dhawan instead of travelling with his team to the team hotel, directly headed to Apollo Gleneagles Hospitals. An official from the hospital admitted that Dhawan was indeed present there but didn’t elaborate the exact reason behind his visit as the team management has requested to keep it secret. “We cannot confirm the extent of his injury or whether it is just a routine check-up right now. But he was here,” the official had said.

A team official when asked about Dhawan’s fitness told media that he was perfectly fine but despite this Virat Kohli might be tempted to go with Ajinkya Rahane after Dhawan failed miserably in the first two ODIs and totally looked out of sorts with his timing. “He’s perfectly fine.” But despite that there is certainly a chance that Virat Kohli and the team management might opt for Mumbai batsman Ajinkya Rahane,” the official said.

Dhawan hasn’t been in the best of forms off late but due to his ability to change the complexion of the game within a blink of an eye, he has been given a longer run than others. Dhawan was the leading run scorer in the Champions Trophy in 2013 and the team management might well be tempted to go with him keeping in mind about his success in England 4 years ago.

Delhi Squad: Gautam Gambhir (captain), Unmukt Chand, Shikhar Dhawan, Nitish Rana, Milind Kumar, Kshitij Sharma, Sarthak Ranjan, Arjun Gupta (wk), Pawan Negi, Manan Sharma, Ishant Sharma, Navdeep Saini, Vikas Tokas, Pradeep Sangwan, Subodh Bhati.
