Shivnarine Chanderpaul named USA Women's team head coach

USA Cricket has appointed Shivnarine Chanderpaul as the head coach for their Women’s and U-19 Women’s teams. He has signed a year and a half contract till the end of 2023 and has already joined the team. USA U-19 Women are traveling to Caribbean for the Cricket West Indies U-19 Rising Stars T20 Championship tournament. They will join six domestic teams and play a round-robin format starting from July 5.

The former West Indies batter is considered one of the greatest batsmen of his era. Chanderpaul scored 11867 runs in 164 matches with 30 centuries to his name and got more than 20000 international runs before announcing his retirement in 2016 at an age of 41. He played County cricket for Lancashire later and was signed by the Caribbean Premier League team Jamaica Tallawahs as their head coach earlier this year.

USA Women’s team rank 28th in ICC Women’s T20I teams chart and have some exciting prospects. USA Cricket operations director Richard Done said that the entire setup is thrilled with Chanderpaul’s appointment and they are looking for his valuable experience.

The 47-year-old batter has been a resident of Orlando since 2003 and is looking forward to his new role with the USA Women’s team. He also revealed his vision to target World Cup qualification in the future for USA Women’s team.

“I am excited to have been appointed as the Head Coach of the USA National Women’s Team and Women’s Under 19 Team. The Women’s game is something I am a huge advocate of, and I have followed the progress of the USA Women’s National team with keen interest,” Chanderpaul said in an official announcement statement.

“I’ve enjoyed being involved in American cricket over the years as a resident of Orlando, so to be given this opportunity to become the Head Coach for USA Cricket is an incredible one. I’m really looking forward to using my 20+ years of international cricket and my recent coaching experiences, to help the women’s teams progress to World Cups in years to come, particularly the inaugural Under 19 Cricket World Cup in January,” he added.
