Shubman Gill, the 18-year-old boy from Punjab has tasted enormous success in the last few months. He was the vital cog in the India U19 team that went into the junior World Cup 2018 in New Zealand. Gill took charge with the bat at the top of the order and ensured the opponents got through the first line of fire having suffered maximum damage. He scored 372 runs, was the Player of the Tournament and thus was a key contributor as the Boys in Blue lifted the trophy.

Considering the superlative performance by the youngsters Kolkata Knight Riders made up their mind to invest in these upcoming stars this season. They picked up most of the top performers from the India U19 squad and that included the likes of Gill, Shivam Mavi and Kamlesh Nagarkoti. It paid rich dividends as both Gill and Mavi featured in most matches for the team and by the end of the campaign were far better cricketers.

Shubman was asked to bat lower down in the order and though it isn’t his natural position managed to contribute 203 runs to the team in 13 innings and maintained an average of 33.83. He was once promoted to No.4 and showed why he is such a highly rated player with a half century against Chennai Super Kings.

Having been on the road for quite a while now, Gill finally made it to his hometown Fazilka, Punjab. His mother who was eagerly waiting for her son gave him a welcome hug as soon as he stepped out of the car. The video emerged on Instagram and has been making rounds all around social media.

The emotions of the family of professional cricketers who dedicate most part of their year to the national and other teams is pretty understandable. Gill’s mother will now want to make sure her son puts up at least a few pounds in the time away from the game before he sets off for India A’s tour of England which is going to be a gruelling challenge for the youngster as well as the team.
