Smriti Mandhana has been making headlines off late with her stupendous form in the ongoing ICC Women’s World Cup. Recently, she expanded her prowess from on the field to off the field, when she hit a sceptical question right out of the park, with her sassy reply. This happened at the post-match press conference after the India vs West Indies match.
20-year-old Mandhana has been in superb touch since the beginning of the tournament. In India’s first match of the WWC 2017, she scored a fluent 90 against England but couldn’t finish the game for her team which they won by 35 runs. Subsequently, Mandhana smashed an unbeaten knock of 106 runs off 108 deliveries, with the help of 13 boundaries and 2 sixes, to guide her team to victory against the West Indies side.
Mandhana’s befitting reply
Mandhana, who was adjudged the Player of the Match the second consecutive time, was confronted with a sceptical question about whether she thought Team India would be able to lift the WWC title. She retorted immediately, by asking “What? You don’t?” BBC reporter, Henry Moeran described the stylish left-hander to be as “as good in the press conference as in the middle”.
The Indian Women’s team, boasting of the likes of Mithali Raj, Jhulan Goswami and Harmanpreet Kaur, is definitely one of the strongest contenders for the cup, this time. With 196 runs and two Player of the Match awards already, it’s evident that Mandhana will be the key player in India’s trophy campaign.

Smriti Mandhana has eyes set on the World Cup
However, the left-hander, who opens the batting for her team, is not satisfied with only scoring centuries. She has her goal set before her eyes: to win the World Cup for her team. She’d battled her way into the tournament while recovering from a torn meniscus and ACL in her left knee. “I haven’t worked really hard for the last five months to get fit just for a 90 or a hundred. I want to do well for India and win the World Cup for India. That’s what I’ve been craving for the last five months,” Mandhana told ICC after India’s 7-wicket victory over the West Indies on Thursday.
