Former India cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar commented after Mumbai Indians (MI) defeated Rajasthan Royals (RR) in a nail-biting IPL 2023 encounter at the iconic Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Sunday, April 30. The Rohit Sharma-led side overcame RR by six wickets to earn their fourth victory in the ongoing season. Most notably, the game marked the 1000th match in the history of the cash-rich league.
After winning the toss and opting to bat first, the Sanju Samson-led team scored 212 runs in 20 overs. For RR, young opener Yashasvi Jaiswal (124 off 62 balls) brought up his first IPL century. Meanwhile, MI chased down the target with three balls to spare, thanks to Suryakumar Yadav's crucial fifty and Tim David's quick-fire knock.
Commenting on the win, Manjreakar appreciated MI's collective efforts to successfully execute the chase. He took to Twitter to share the lessons he learnt from the game, asserting that a team required more than one batter to contribute at grounds such as Wankhede. The 57-year-old also stated that if teams had the option to choose, they should always bat second.
"Lessons learnt from tonight’s game. At the Wankhede, you need more than one batter to contribute. And yes, always bat second when you have a choice," Majrekar's tweet read.
David's fiery knock helps MI beat RR by six wickets
Despite the fact that skipper Rohit Sharma (3) was dismissed earlier, MI's batters were exceptional during the chase, most of them chipping in with significant contributions for the home team. Cameron Green and Suryakumar Yadav played brilliant cameos as both scored 44 and 55 runs respectively. Tim David joined Tilak Varma after Tent Boult removed Suryakumar, following which, David smashed two fours and five sixes to help MI get over the line. Tilak also had an excellent cameo while building an important partnership with David.
When MI needed 17 runs off the final over bowled by Jason Holder, David smashed three consecutive sixes to ensure a win for the five-time champions. The 27-year-old Australian scored 45 runs in 14 deliveries to remain unbeaten in what turned out to be the highest successful IPL run chase at the Wankhede.
