The first day of the first Test between hosts Bangladesh and India produced an entertaining contest as both sides jostled for an early advantage in the series opener. The home side raced out of the block with early wickets in the morning session, however, India struck back with half-centuries from Shreyas Iyer and Cheteshwar Pujara to hand their side the advantage heading into Day 2.

India's stand-in skipper KL Rahul decided to bat first on a spin-friendly track in Chattogram after winning the toss. The opening pair of Shubman Gill and Rahul made a promising start to the Indian innings with a sedated opening stand. However, both the batters fell to tame dismissals to hand the home side the advantage in the morning session.

India's morning went from bad to worse after the in-form Virat Kohli was trapped in front by Taijul Islam for a solitary run. Bangladesh were all smiles heading to the lunch break after making quick work of the Indian top order. The under-fire Rishabh Pant came out all guns blazing, pushing the home side on the back foot with a brisk 46.

Pujara and Iyer rescued India from a precarious position with a massive stand for the fifth wicket

Pant threatened to take the game away from the hosts before Mehidy Hasan Miraz cleaned him up to wrestle back the momentum for the home side. With the scoreboard reading 112/4, India were in desperate need of a partnership. Their calls were heard when Shreyas Iyer joined hands with a stubborn Cheteshwar Pujara in the middle.

Iyer survived a few close calls early in his innings as the slower bowlers were finding plenty of assistance from the pitch. But the stylish batter slowly found his groove while Pujara continued to frustrate the Bangladeshi bowlers with his trademark impregnable defense. Although Iyer got lucky a couple of times, his batting partner fell ten short of a deserving century, ending a mammoth 149-run stand for the fifth wicket.

Taijul Islam was the star performer with the ball for Bangladesh, scalping the big wickets of Virat Kohli and Cheteshwar Pujara. Ebadot Hossain was another bowler who impressed with his persistence and was unlucky to go wicketless on the first day of the series opener.
