IND vs NZ: Ishan Kishan sacrifices his wicket for Virat Kohli, gets run-out after terrible mix-up
Virat Kohli could not put up a remarkable score and was dismissed soon.
During the third One-Day International against New Zealand, Indian youngster Ishan Kishan and Virat Kohli were involved in a serious mix-up in the middle after the Men in Blue were put to bat first. In an effort to capitalize on the strong start provided by openers Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill, Ishan Kishan started off well.
On the third delivery of the 35th over, Ishan initially appeared interested in attempting a run but gave up halfway through. Ishan's shift in mindset went unnoticed by Kohli, who was eager to get to the other end of the field and almost covered the distance. Virat survived, but Ishan was eventually ran out despite him being the batter closer to the striker's end.
The left-handed batter faced Jacob Duffy's delivery and hit the ball directly to cover for a fast single, but he also engaged in a yes-no confusion with Kohli on the non-striker's end. While Ishan looked confused in the middle, Kohli looked confident to get the single. Both of them eventually ended up on the striker’s end with Kohli entering the crease ahead of Ishan.
Ishan appeared hesitant to enter the crease again, likely choosing to "sacrifice" his wicket for the former India skipper. Kohli could not make an impact in the game and was dismissed for a 27-ball 36 soon after Ishan walked back to the pavilion.
Centuries from Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill powers India to 385/9
Speaking of the game, a 212-run opening stand between Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill helped India get off to a terrific start. The duo set the tone straight for the middle-order batters, but they failed to capitalize on the momentum. India lost some quick wickets before vice-captain Hardik Pandya stabilized the innings with a well-composed half-century.
While Rohit ended a three-year-long draught of an ODI century, Gill continued his red-hot form with the bat to bag his third ODI century of just this month. Courtesy of the magnificent centuries by the openers, followed by Pandya’s heroics with the bat, India managed to finish at 385/9 at the end of their 50-over quota, thereby setting a difficult target for the visitors to chase.
