India men's team holds indoor nets session ahead of Asian Games 2026 cricket event
The BCCI shared footage of the squad training in Aichi-Nagoya as the men's cricket event gets under way on September 24.
The Indian men's cricket squad held an indoor net session in Aichi-Nagoya on September 24, 2026, the same day the men's cricket tournament at the 20th Asian Games got underway. The 20th Asian Games are being staged in Japan from September 19 to October 4, 2026.
The BCCI posted a video on X showing wicket-keeper Sanju Samson and other squad members working in the nets. Head coach VVS Laxman was also present at the session, according to the footage shared by the board.
The men's cricket competition runs from September 24 to October 3, 2026, at the Nisshin Cricket Ground inside Kōrogi Sports Park in Nisshin, on the outskirts of Nagoya. The venue hosts both the men's and women's competitions. Ten teams are taking part in the men's tournament, with all matches played in the Twenty20 format.
India enter the competition directly at the quarter-final stage. Their first match is scheduled for September 28 at 10:00 AM IST, against the second-placed team from Group A. The specific opponent will be determined once the qualifying round concludes.
Shreyas Iyer captains the men's side, with Tilak Varma named as vice-captain. Yash Thakur was added to the squad after Harshit Rana was ruled out with a hamstring injury.
India arrive as defending champions. At Hangzhou 2023, the men's gold was won under Ruturaj Gaikwad's captaincy after the final against Afghanistan was washed out, with India awarded the gold as the higher-seeded team.
The women's team had already completed their campaign before the men's session took place. Harmanpreet Kaur's side defeated Sri Lanka by 147 runs in the women's final at Kōrogi Sports Park on September 22, 2026. India posted 216/3 in 20 overs, the highest team total in women's cricket at the Asian Games, and bowled Sri Lanka out for 69 in 15.4 overs. India are therefore defending gold medals in both competitions at these Games.
