The second day of the box office Test series between India and Australia saw a much-improved performance from the visitors. However, India are in a supreme position after a late riposte from Ravindra Jadeja and Axar Patel stretched their lead to a considerable 144 runs. Indian skipper Rohit Sharma and Australia's debutant Todd Murphy grabbed the limelight on a compelling day of Test cricket.

India started the day on a bright note as Rohit Sharma, and Ravichandran Ashwin piled the pressure on the visitors with a solid stand for the second wicket. But the visitors fought back through debutant Todd Murphy, who removed Ashwin and Cheteshwar Pujara in quick succession. Rohit and the former Indian skipper Virat Kohli took India to Lunch without any further casualties.

However, catastrophe struck for the Indians on the very first delivery after the break as Kohli was stranded down the leg-side to hand Murphy his fourth wicket of the match. Following good work from the young offie, his senior bowling partner Nathan Lyon also got in on the act, cleaning Suryakumar Yadav to halt India's progress.

Meanwhile, Rohit Sharma displayed tremendous composure from the other end, keeping the Australian bowlers at bay. During a decisive 61-run stand with Ravindra Jadeja, the Indian skipper breached the three-figure mark to become the first Indian skipper to register a century in all three forms of the game.

Much like the second session, Australia hit back instantly after the break as skipper Pat Cummins dismissed his counterpart with a peach of a delivery in the very first over after Tea. KS Bharat, India's other debutant, also failed to leave his mark and became Murphy's fifth victim of the innings. The visitors were keen on keeping India's lead to a minimum after the young spinner's exploits.

But they hit a brick wall in the form of Ravindra Jadeja and Axar Patel. Jadeja, who did the bulk of the scoring in the initial part of the partnership, brought up yet another half-century to add to his five wicket-haul in the first innings. Axar, who has improved leaps and bounds with the bat, pressed on the accelerator against a tired Australian bowling unit, registering his second half-century in the format. Both batters remained unbeaten at the crease, adding an invaluable 81 runs for the eighth wicket to take their lead to 144 runs.
