Although the fourth Test between India and Australia fizzled out in a draw, the home side sealed their spot in the World Test Championship final courtesy of a thrilling New Zealand victory over Sri Lanka, thousands of miles away from Ahmedabad.
The fifth and final day of the exciting Test series saw India get off to a fast start after Matthew Kuhnemann was trapped in front by Ravichandran Ashwin. It was a fortunate dismissal for the home side as the replays clearly showed the ball to be missing the stumps, only for the Aussies to not challenge the umpire's on-field call.
India sensed an unlikely victory on a batting paradise, but their hopes were shortlived as Travis Head, and Marnus Labuschagne stitched together a chanceless 139-run stand for the second wicket. The southpaw looked well on course to breach the three-figure mark before a loose shot against Axar Patel brought his downfall just ten short of a magnificent century.
Australia salvage a draw after diligent batting performance in Ahmedabad
Head's wicket came a bit too late for the Indians as the tourists had already eaten up the majority of the overs on the fifth and final day. With India's spot in the WTC final sealed by New Zealand's victory against Sri Lanka, the match was headed for a dreaded stalemate. However, Rohit Sharma dished out a bit of excitement for the home crowd, tossing the ball to Shubman Gill and Cheteshwar Pujara.
But during the 79th over of the second innings, both captains decided to shake hands, bringing an end to the fourth and final Test at the Narendra Modi Stadium. Former Indian skipper Virat Kohli was named the player of the match for his glittering 75th international century on the fourth day of the series finale.
