The sixth match of the Indian Premier League 2023 witnessed Chennai Super Kings and Lucknow Super Giants cross swords at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Monday, April 3. Being put into bat by the Super Giants’ skipper, the MS Dhoni-led side ended up posting a mammoth total of 217/7 within their allotted quota of 20 overs. The total was achieved courtesy of early attacks by openers Devon Conway (47) and Ruturaj Gaikwad (57) and cameos at the death of Ambati Rayudu (27*) and MS Dhoni (12).

In reply to CSK’s 79 runs in the powerplay, LSG scored 80 but lost the precious wicket of Kyle Mayers in the process. The Caribbean batter was caught in the deep off Moeen Ali’s bowling after scoring a fiery knock of 22-ball 53. In an attempt to carry forward the momentum, at 3, Deepak Hooda too lost his wicket to Mitchell Santner.

However, things worsened for the visiting side, as skipper KL Rahul, who was looking well-set batting on 20, lost his wicket in the very next over. Three wickets in quick succession meant that his side was left reeling at 86 for 3. The English spinner returned with another scalp as he got the better of all-rounder Krunal Pandya, who had already hit a maximum while still being fresh at the crease. The off-spinner broke through the batting line-up of Lucknow to take Marcus Stoinis’ wicket, thereby ending with match-winning figures of 4/26 in his spell.

Tushar Deshpande, who went for plenty in his first over, bounced back stronger to crush Lucknow’s hopes by picking up the West Indian keeper-batter Nicholas Pooran’s wicket. The lower-middle order of the Lucknow-based franchise couldn’t do much as their side eventually ended up losing the game by a margin of 12 runs.

With this win, CSK bettered their domination at Chepauk, leading them to their 41st win at the venue in 57 games. For his exceptional all-round contribution (19 runs and four wickets), Moeen Ali was adjudged Player of the Match.
