Delhi Capitals skipper David Warner scaled another milestone during his side's clash against Rajasthan Royals as the veteran Aussie opener beat former Indian skipper Virat Kohli to become the fastest player to 6000 runs in the Indian Premier League. He dispatched Kiwi pacer Trent Boult for a boundary to become the first overseas player to this feat.
Chasing a daunting target set by the Rajasthan Royals, Delhi Capitals got off to a horrendous start after Trent Boult dismissed Prithvi Shaw and Manish Pandey on successive deliveries in his very first over. Despite those two early blows, skipper David Warner dug deep, holding firm from one end.
Warner breached the 6000 run mark in IPL after dispatching Boult for a boundary in the ninth over of the chase. He became the first overseas player to reach this feat in the competition and surpassed Virat Kohli's record to become the fastest to 6000 runs in terms of innings. He reached the milestone in his 165th appearance in the competition and is only behind Kohli and Shikhar Dhawan in the run-scoring charts.
Delhi Capitals succumb to third successive defeat
Interestingly, the veteran Aussie opener, who started his IPL journey with Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals) has the best average among batters with 4000+ runs in the competition, and his strike rate (140.08) is bettered only by AB de Villiers (151.68) and Chris Gayle (148.96). Apart from being the quickest to 6000 runs in the IPL, Warner also holds the record of being the fastest to 5000 IPL runs.
Despite Warner's second half-century of the ongoing tournament, Delhi failed to get anywhere near Rajasthan Royals' total and were defeated by a comprehensive margin of 57 runs, their third successive defeat in the 16th edition of the tournament.
